The Macallan Edition No.3 is the latest release in this innovative annual Series. Like preceding releases, Edition No.3 is an exploration into our approach to whisky making, exposing the detail of its creation, and offering true transparency.
Inspiration and innovation lie at the heart of The Macallan and nowhere is this more evident than with the Edition Series. To make Edition No.3 we called on Master Perfumer Roja Dove to provide his remarkable sensory knowledge and experience to describe distinctive aromas in particular oak casks.
When we experience and enjoy whisky, flavor and aroma are intimately entwined. The power of aroma is unquestionable and it is this power which makes the approach to Edition No.3 truly mesmerizing.
Roja brought his skill to the distillery, nosing a range of whisky samples and providing his thoughts and interpretation of the character and aromas he encountered. Subsequently our Master Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgarno utilized Roja’s articulation of aromas to select dominant notes to help shape the final character of Edition No.3.
Drawn from a combination of European and American oak casks, Edition No.3 presents a sweet and fruity character. It balances a heavier base reflective of The Macallan, with notes of citrus, vanilla, florals and fresh cut oak.
A multi-sensory experience of taste and aroma
- Barley Gold
- Reminiscent of a fine fragrance, the nose leads with vanilla ice cream, fresh cut oak and delicate florals. Orange oil provides subtle grandeur while ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg flit in and out in various guises. Vanilla imparts sweetness, leading citrus fruits forward then allowing chocolate to show. Burnished oak delivers a soft ending.
- Sweet fruit, vanilla and rich fruit cake with suggestions of apricot, pear and crisp green apple. Hints of ginger and cinnamon are balanced with a light resinous oak finale.
- Long, sweet and fruity, leaving a lasting impression on the senses.
